    Default Noisy Graphics card pc

Anyone had any experience with a powercolor R9 290 graphics card?

Reason i ask is i bought one an its one of the loudest cards i've ever had!

is there any way to make it any quiter? As i actually have to turn the tv up to drown out the fan noise!

Any suggestions before i send it back? Card is this one:

Was it always noisy from new or just recently? They naturally run hot so the fan goes at some speed to maintain some sort of effective cooling. AMD acknowledge this and have just brought out a card with built in watercooling to keep the noise levels down.If it's only recently then the fans bearing is on its way out. Do some digging on you tube for benchtest on your card to see if they sound similar under load.Last year i bought 2 7970's with 2 fans on each for extra cooling and were shocked buy how hot they ran and how noisy they were too. All gpu cards now run very hot due to the demand of all the newer games...so we pay the price....noise or watercooling. Hope this helps.

i normally buy fanless cards. noise free. it just comes with massive heat sinks, and if you've got other cooling sources in your case then it will still run perfectly cool.

AMD's are loud, but Windows might not be scaling back the fan speed properly though - at full chat the fan on mine drowns out 5 case fans and the CPU, at lowest speed it's barely audible.

I bought the card as an ex display, at first i thought it might be the thermal paste thats making it run warmer so the fan has to work harder, took it off and this is what i was greeted with:

Cleaned it up as much as i could:

it lowerd the temp by 1-2c but the fan still kicks in the same, so i downloaded afterburner and alterd the fan curve.. still just as bad haha

would it be best to try and watercool it?

Are you running the Catalyst drivers and control centre?

In Control Centre go to Performance - Graphics Overdrive - You can see the actual fan speed as a % as well as the temps. You can also set the fan control to manual, wouldn't do that permanently but you can at least set it to the lowest & highest setting to see how much difference there is, and if it's worth mucking about to get it slower.

Summertime is always a testing time for gpus and poorly cooled cpus. Does your case have plenty of fans, does it sit where it can get plenty of air? Your options...if you go water cooled are get a conventional set up block, pipes pump etc....or there's a cheat...a cheap h80 type cpu cooler and cable tie it to the gpu board and just get memory cooler blocks for the ram. Or get a louder tv or move the pc to a different room...preferably soundproofed :-)

This is why I have 5 case fans - AMD cards run hotter than Nvidia's in my experience and don't cope as well in the summer.
