    Default Burnt out clutch?

I think I might have done something a little silly with my 2004 Vectra 1.8...

I'd been getting a bit of vibration and rattle when pulling away slowly and although the clutch itself was fine, it was getting a tad annoying. I got my girlfriend to put the car in first and hold the clutch just above the biting point while I stuck my head under the bonnet to try to locate the source of the noise. Unfortunatly after about 30 seconds to 1 minute there was a bad burning smell (like hot brakes) and we stopped. Naturally I crapped myself as the immediate thought came to mind that I'd burnt out the clutch. About 5 minutes later I went to drive away and the clutch juddered like crazy as I reversed out of the space and then again when I pulled away.

Have I completely shafted my clutch? It seems ok again now (nice bit of wheelspin on the dry road when messing about an hour later) and I guess the real test will be later tongiht when I'm driving around in a fully loaded car.

Looking back I was probably being a bit stupid and should have dropped the car into a garage for a check, but I'd be a little surprised if 30 seconds on the biting point would be enough to damage it badly.

Thankfully it's still under warranty (my "testing" will not be mentioned to the dealer!) but any advice or ideas would be much appreciated. The car's done 32000 and the clutch has never slipped before.

    Thanks

Don't want to upset you, but clutch probably won't be covered under warranty at that age. Classed as a wear and tear item as far as I know.

If you complain about a judder when pulling away i think you should be ok for warranty. I have done them at nearly 3 years under warranty.

Only bought it 2 monts ago from an independent dealer with a warranty so still covered thankfully. Just driven 140 miles on it and it seems fine now. Think it must just have been extremely hot.

yep, sounds like your 'testing' just cooked the friction materials surface leading it to glaze slightly. driving it for a while would have broken the glaze and let it bite again..like sundance says, it's very common for the 1.8's to judder when taking up drive, a nd if you push the judder side of it with your local dealer they should swap it out for you..just hope the surface of the flywheel isn't blued as that will point to your 'testing'..
