    Default 1.8 oil pumps

Following on from my thread in the car chat section about my car being in the dealers for another night (looks like I won't get it back untill Monday at the earliest), VX technical have a couple of options for the source of the ticking noise and are sending out a new oil pump for my 1.8.

Are the 1.8 oil pumps known to be noisy?

not at all...they are a centrifugal pump and should have effectively no side play in the gears...

perhaps they suspect the bypass valve spring?.. they are oblidged to change the whole pump whatever is wrong with it..

Thanks. I get the impression that they are going to fit a new pump and see if the noise goes, and if not try something else.

I assume that to fit the pump they will have to disturb the cambelt, if so would they fit a new cambelt when putting it back together?

probably not.. not unless it's change interval is soon... they may ask you to buy it and then fit it as part of the job..

Do you think it would be worth doing (even at 14k?)? Mind you, if it turns out not to be the pump and they have to strip it again...

a rare moment of clairty in my tired mind..

is the noise from the top of the engine??.. i wonder if they suspect oil starvation due to pump issues..??.. does it seem a deep rattle from the bottom of the engine or a lighter tapping from the top end?

Funny you should mention that, becuase... its hard to tell!

When the auxilliary belt was dropped off it appeared to come from the general area of the cambelt, as to if it was top or bottom I'd say more towards the bottom.

Its not a tick in the sense of injector type noise, nor would I say its the kind of noise you'd get with a knock.

When it was restarted the noise was louder for a second or so before settling back to "normal" - I'm wondering if it is oil related as over Christmas when it was really cold it really ticked on startup and would only settle down when the engine got warm.

does make me wonder about oil starvation..but if it was in the cambelt area then i'm surprised that they haven't investigated the tensioners and idlers on the belt drive..and the water pump..all could give you that rattle.. they must be very sure of oil starvation or supply probs to 'dig' that far into the engine to change the pump..

Hmm... started to get a bit worried now, just looked up where the oil pump is.

I wonder if they are starting at the furthest stage and working backwards...

If it is the pump, and its had oil starvation problems for the last 3-5 months, what could the long term issues/problems possibly be? (ie what should I look out for?)
