I changed a cdti 150 for a 2.2 direct. I got bored with the narrow torque band of the diesel - there's plenty of thrust but it's all over in seconds and you have to work hard to keep the revs down. The 2.2 is much more enjoyable to drive and faster too as long as you give it plenty of revs!

At last this is what i've been waiting for!
A guy who's had the 1.9cdti and gone over to the 2.2 direct!
This results in someone who can give a proper opinion on real life findings, about the performance of the 2 motors, and make perfect sense of why all the (probably standard) 1.9 cdti's around my neck of the woods start to play and then give up!!!!
No diesel rose coloured spec talk for a change

I've stayed kinda quiet, but our family runs 3 2.2's and a 150 CDti..

all i can say is that there isn't much between them..the 150 suffers from a flat turbo lag below 1500 rpm, then the turbo cuts in and we're off....

the 2.2's need revs, but will pull from the floor..it loves to rev high and will really whip along...

with only 15 -18mpg difference between them, and given the 2.2's rock solid reliabilty ( unlike our cdti's) we think they're the one to choose..haven't had one engine fault with any we've owned..

I have a 2.2 direct and its not a rocket but it seems to be loosening up (done 7.5k now) and is driving better than ever at the moment

ABout 28mpg round town (my right foot is a little heavy) and 35-38 on a run (70-90mph)

Stick with it mad dog, mine was still a little tight at 15k,now at 23k she's great,i agree they do improve with the mileage.
Just change the filter for a performance filter, use petrol additives to clean the fuel system, and always run either 99ron from Tescos,or Shell V Power.
As i've said before this makes such a difference, you'll be well chuffed, and claiming she's no rocket will not come to mind!! LOL
    Although with a turbo fitted.....

Look forward to meeting you in my 1.9 CDTi

The only characteristics I find different for the engines is the 1.9 obviously doesn't rev as hard as the 2.2 as it is a diesel.

Previous experience is a 1L swift and a 1.6L escort, so my 2.2 is bound to feel fast! I like the engine becuase it's very quiet, keep it below 3500rpm and you basically don't hear it. doing 70 you can hear wind and road noise but not a peep from the engine. Rev it high and the noise is a little whiny, but you are rewarded with good power. You can push it over 80 in third gear so slip roads are easy, one of the worst driving situations on my old cars.

My experiences are based on the six speed box. I did consider a diesel when i bought the car, but the extra cost (to "upgrade" from a 2.2 petrol to a 1.9 diesel!) would have taken me several years to pay for itself. not worth it IMO.
