The main difference is that the newer Cdti uses a common rail fuel pump system instead of the old style rotary pump. So instead of having your diesel pumped along individual lines to each cylinder, the common rail system uses the pump to pressure the fuel into a 'rail' this then distributes the fuel into each cylinder via injectors.

This allows higher pressure fuel injection and more accurate delivery making the engine more efficient.

    Basically.

Quick and simple - CDTi is a Common Rail Diesel; the DTi isn't. There's loads more differences but that's the main one.

Do all the CDTI's have 6 speed gearboxs?

I have a six speed and I think the whole 'gear change experience' lets the car down somewhat.

It's also a badge thing -the CDTi "brand" didn't come in until late 2004, so my 3.0 CDTi is actually badged as DTi, even though it's the same Y30DT engine.

i agree - my misses has a golf GT TDI and the gear change is so smooth - whereas i find all vectra gearbox's are quick rough sometimes especially going into 3rd and 5th gears......had it majorly on an old '98 GSi where it was really tight getting into 3rd and 5th.
