Default What engine to go for?

After parting company with the C over a year ago now, ive had a Kangoo van, new shape Laguna Estate, Corsa C, Omega Elite, Astra Sport and I wanna go back to a Vectra C sometime next month, I did have a 1.8 Ls and that was ok but im gonna go for an SRi... problem being what engine is the best...?? i wanted a 1.9CDTi but they are out of my price range, so looking to get a 2.2 petrol, what are they like? Perfoemance wise (and petrol wise!!) I'm looking to spend £5k and ive seen a few going for that price. If I go down to Vauxhall what are the chances of me getting a test drive in one but im not looking to buy it right away...

I think you might be hard pushed to get a 2.2 SRi for 5 grand dude. But you never know I suppose. Maybe an elegance, club or an SXi.

Nah am only 20 and the Omega was just too lazy for me plus I prefer the sportier look of the SRi, and being a 3.0 it was a nightmare on petrol, insurance is a lot less too... my choices were, Vectra SRi 2.2 or Corsa C SRi 1.8 and I just prefer the look of the Vectra as im more into big cars, also its easier with the baby!

The first one been modified this why is so cheap. Probably the “racer”’s car. Give a miss.

Second one is all right. I bought the car from those guys. Not a lemon, but some body work been required (left side moulding has to be repainted + £170 ).

Better go for ex-company car. Fleet cars normally have better service history and mostly motorway mileage (long trips are fine – the short trips are the one which kills your car).

Alternative is 1.8 petrol. Cheaper to run and cheaper to insure. However you have to rape the engine on high revs to get any performance out of it. But it is Ok for cruising. 2900 rev on 74 mph (recommended EU speed on motorways) , switch on the cruise control and relax. You can get about 40mpg if you doesn’t go more then 3000 revs.

I dont think theres that much performance gain with a 2.2 over a 1.8. I had a 2.2 astra a few years back and it was okay, but really needed loads of revs to make it go, plus the boxes can be a bit notchy.
