    Default Grind/Scrape @ 2000rpm

Hi all, thought I might pick somebody's brains to see if they can help.

    The problem:

If I hold a rev at anything over 2000 (as opposed to going through the rev range) I get a distinct scraping noise coming from the engine/transmission.
It also happens when I dip the clutch to change gear but the noise follows the revs down (don't have to hold a rev).
(n.b, does not do it at tickover or at standstill, only when vehicle is traveling)

It is starting to pee me off as it has already been in four times and VX don't seem to have a clue what it is, and it's going in again on sunday for another couple of days, and to make things worse I keep getting given a real poxy 1.0L corsa as a courtesy car.

    Anybody got any ideas??

    Basil,

As it only happens when the car is moving this surely points to a gearbox fault or the like. If it was doing it stationary, then you could include the engine.

Several of the others have had gearboxes replaced (scooby, Lrob).
Perhaps they will come on here and give you their thoughts.

    Are you still under warranty??

Yes I'm still under warranty, it would be intersting to hear from scooby or Lrob to see what their symptoms were or if they could identify with something with my situation and their's.

I'm coming to the conclusion that it probably is a gearbox problem as well, but when it went in the last time the VX bloke reckons it might have something to do with the timing gear and mentioned that they were going to strip it and check it, so when it was ready for collection, I asked if they had found anything wrong with the timing and the VX bloke looked at me puzzled and reckoned that there is nothing wrong with the timing and that the v-belt upgrade was all that was required, and how wrong he was!
Haven't got a clue what they are going to do this time but it had better be something as I am getting a bit peeved at having to go to my dealer every five mins to try and get my car sorted.

    Default Update

    Hiya chaps,
Firstly I would like to thank all the guy's who posted in an attempt to help me with my problem.

Have just got my car back this afternoon from VX and it still isn't fixed.
They reckon however that the noise is caused by a faulty downpipe from the exhaust, apparently it isn't sealing correctly causing it to "blow back".

They aslo claimed that all 1.9 CDTi SRi's do it and it is a fault that they cannot cure, has anyone else on here have or had the same problem with their's??

The proposed remedy to this "uncurable fault" however, is to replace the downpipe and they are also replacing the catalytic convertor under warranty, but have to wait till thursday for them to be fitted, (let's hope this does the trick, i'm on 5 visits and counting and have had enough of being fobbed off)

I will update in due course.

Yeah that would be nice, but I don't know how to go about it without sounding too demanding, i.e sounding like i'm on "the make" when all I want is for my poor car to be well again

    Basil...

I can't believe for a minute that all the CDTi's have the same fault... The lads on here would be spitting feathers!! A fob-off of grand proportion methinks..

All you can do is try.. But in the meantime try VX Customer Care to see if they can get you any 'extra' help if this downpipe change doesn't fix it...

what absolute garbage. If the downpipe doesn't do the trick, ask to use their phone to call Vauxhall Customer Care.

Also ask them to put it in writing why all the CDTi's have this fault, and pass that on to Vx Customer Services too. I'm willing to bet that they won't put their name to that absolutely ridiculous comment.

That's just what I thought too.
I'm nearly 100% certain that this downpipe and cat change won't cure it, as i'm almost certain that it is a gearbox/drivetrain related problem, but i'm not going to turn down a nice new cat fitted under warraty am I?.

Does anyone on here know if the Veccy has an hydraulically lubricated gearbox? if it has a mate of mine suggested it could be the feed pipe being blocked therefore the gearbox would be running almost dry, apart from the limited amount it carries in the casing itself.

    Can anybody shed any light?
