Exclamation Falklands .. 25 Years on

The reason i joined the Army was due to the thoughts of what went through my mind during the spring/summer of 1982.... and changed my life forever

The war was triggered by the occupation of South Georgia by Argentina on 19 March 1982

And was followed by the occupation of the Falklands, and ended with Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982.

War was not declared by either side.

The war lasted 74 days, with 255 British and 649 Argentine soldiers, sailors, and airmen, and three civilian Falklanders killed.

    British
    258 killed -- 777 wounded -- 59 taken prisoner

    Argentine
    649 killed -- 1,068 wounded -- 11,313 taken prisoner

    We will remember them

I was 14 and remember it like it was yesterday. Vividly remember "I counted them all out and I counted them all back"

A lad who lived a few doors up from me was on HMS Antelope when she was bombed. Luckily they didn't go off initially. Although one disposal expert was killed later.

I've just read Dave Morgans book about flying the Harrier in the Falklands and also Vulcan 607 about the bombing of port Stanley. Both excellent reads

    very well put, mate
about the only thing old maggie got right,
personally, i'd like to make special mention to the Household Division, always overshadowed by the Para's achievements, but just as hard, just as proud and just as efficient.
Probably the last time we should have gone to war, but that takes nothing away from the achievements of all Britain's Armed Forces, Before or Since.

Nicely put Steve, been down there myself, first in 90', went up to Tumbledown and it was quite moving. Lots of 'stuff' still up there Argie boots, water bottles etc and all the fighting positions with empty 'brass' everywhere.

We would sruggle to do that sort of mission again.

There ya go, I'll try and take a picture of the statue of the soldier with the flag that's local over the next couple of days.

After this amount of time, I think we can also remember the poor Argie kids that got sent there against their will, and the 2200 sailors who went down on the Belgrano.

And not forgetting CHILE, who without their help we would have lost more ppl and ships.

Something I learned from this was that my enemies are seldom a foreign population, it's their leaders, and in this case it was the Junta, who have achieved the total breakdown of Argentina.

    Very well put Steve.

I've done two tours of duty in the Falkland Islands and it's not until you're there that you really realise what both sides must of gone through. The terrain is very hard going and most of the time there's little or no cover.

Argentine conscripts were given a rifle (not maintained) a water bottle and a blanket and told to hold their position. Must of been very scary for them; no wonder they surrendered.

Our boys must of been equally scared as they knew that the Argentine Forces had weeks to prepare themselves for our arrival. Our boys really didn't know what to expect other than the intel form our special forces who had been in place prior to the main taskforces arrival.

Having been there, and seen the devastation that's still lying around and the way these beautiful islands have been ruined by mine fields (which are still in situ), I for one shall be thinking of all the fallen men and women and also all the people still being affecting by this tragic 'war'.
