Why would he charge you for a cambelt kit if all it was doing was looking at it stalling??????? Could also be the inlet manifold needs cleaning, just past the butterfly valve.....
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Did he clean the Idle Control Valve (ICV)? If not and it still stalls then yes, you've been had. Dirty ICV is pretty common and takes about 20 minutes and a can of carb cleaning spray to fix.

On the other hand, you could look at it that you now have all the bits that do fail replaced, a new belt is never a bad thing anyway, if that lot had been done in a Vx dealer you could easily double it.

Did it sort out your problem?

If not, do get the ICV cleaned, and the EGR valve as well, and the other two things that could cause it are the Exhaust probe and the Airflow meter.

if the car was at or approaching 60k then the cambelt is a good thing to get anyway. I agree about the ICV, I cleaned mine several times over the 5 years I had your model car, always idled faultlessly afterwards.

on the 1800, i'd change the belt every 40,000..they have a nasty habit of going 'boing' if you run them much longer..
