    Question Trip Computer Gamble

OK, everyone does this, I'm sure, but I'm intrigued how accurate the trip comp actually is. I'm trying to use as much as possible of the fuel in my tank b4 i fill up again, to get rid of the nasty noisy tesco derv!

    At the moment it's saying...

    Range 1 mile
    Trip Consumption 10.8 gallons
The petrol light is on, but not flashing.

Now, I know for certain the range is grossly wrong, because when my light starts flashing, i'm down to about 10 litres. I'm sure I read somewhere that the trip consumption is calculated by measuring the fuel through the injectors, and is reasonably accurate.

For my 60 litre tank, divide by 4.546 to get 13.19 gallons. At the current average consumption of 42.8 mpg, I reckon I've probably got nearly another 100 miles before I have to seriously look for a fuel station.

Anybody have any experience or comments?

Don't do it, you are dredging up the silt in the tank.

I can't understand this don't run it low on fuel idea. It must take it from the bottom anyway or it would run out as soon as you set off unless it has a floating suction that takes the fuel from the top. All my other cars have taken it from the bottom. Also the movement of the car will mix it all up anyway. No doubt someone will say Im wrong.

I think your calculations are approximately correct. When the trip computere says empty it only takes 52 litres to fill up.

if you let your tank run dry vauxhall wont warranty the pump in the tank but dont worry about the price, its only about £1200 + fitting.

do you think trying to get the 100 miles out of it a good idea

As above. It's a silly game and should be avoided at all costs!

Having to reprime the injectors on a cold, wet evening doesn't do it for me. That's if you can do it.

I would make sure you carry a can of fuel with you - you can guarantee that you will run out completely when you're miles from the nearest station - the longest walk is the walk to fetch fuel!!!

Reminds me of a story years ago when Drinky was explaining to me the wonders of a fuel computer in an old car we had. His explanation "so that means we still have enough fuel to go 15 miles" were immediately followed by the sound a car makes as it runs out of petrol................immediately followed by the sounds the car makes when kicked severely by a 6 foot bloke!!!
