Default Indirect interior light in rear view mirror ?

Well i've had my vectra for over 2.5 years and my wife noticed last night that it has a little orange light on the bottom of the rear view mirror.

    First time i've seen it

Is this the indirect lighting thingy i've seen people talk about ? if so, what are the benefits of it

My wife has the New Astra and the light on that is like a Gestapo torture light compared to my far more seductive light on my little Signum!

I have been in cars with and without indirect lighting, and can't honestly say there is a huge need for it. Natural lighting from streelights, other vehicles etc is enough to be able to see inside the car.

Not if you're on a country road or an unlit A road or motorway. I find it makes quite a difference - nice little feature. When mine went faulty, I noticed it not being there.

This feature was invented for smokers, so they can find the lighter and ashtray easier in the dark, it's true!

I agree, I don't really notice it when there's streetlights around, but on some of the country roads round here I find it useful at nighttime.

How do you switch it on as i've only just noticed it, is it on when the lights are turned on or just when the main interior light is on

I have been in all of those situations, but haven't really noticed any huge difference. To be fair, when I'm driving I prefer to be looking out of the front window and not around the cars interior , and I don't smoke anymore either.
