Urgent internet security help needed

I am becoming concerned about the material available on the internet, and the ease in which my daughter can access it. I probably share this thought with many other parents.

She is 12 and is computer literate.

How can I set up controls that will restrict which website she can access? Is there any software available?

She has her own user name so and can only log onto that account. My account has administrator rights, but do not want to have the same restrictions for legitimate reasons.

Whilst I don't want to loose the benefits of the WWW and all the good things it can bring, I don't want her to be able to access the seedier side of it.

I am very worried, so please help.

i think mcafee do a security suite package with perental controls where u can set up firewalls. check out the mcafee site mate.....

Mozilla Firefox, and add the toolbar in add on's to it,

We use Surfcontrol here at work, but this is on a coorperate network. They might do a standalone version.

I'm not a parent, but I think keeping an eye on what she's looking at is probably the safest way to keep things in check...

A bit like a child and dog, i wouldn`t leave a child and the internet unsupervised, as you say lots of seedy stuff, but even innocent sites can be infiltrated by peado`s .. You can get a program called net nanny which you set the limits of surfing on though ..

I've been looking at this myself as my 2 have computers on my home network. I'm looking at Cybersitter (http://www.cybersitter.com/) as its one of only 2 that have remote control available as I want to be able to update the settings on their machines from mine.

Have not bought it yet but probably will, and install, in the next few days. I'll update with how I get on if anyone is interested.

I don't think browser configs or firewalls etc are enough - I have these but it won't stop even accidental search results.

theres lots of different ways of screening what kids see, if your not looking to spend money, then the simplest way if you have Windows Xp is to go into Control panel, then into internet options, click on content, then click on each category you feel you don't wish your daughter to see and move the slider as far to the left as possible and this will block out the sites you don't want her to view.

It's not completely safe though there will be websites that the filter could miss and if you don't have a user name set up with limited access, your daughter will be able to change the settings back so she can see what she wants.


If you do want to spend money though purchase Norton Internet Security, it's much safer and has fully adjustable parental controls with password protection, so only you can change what can be seen.

I use it on my home computers, and I have sworn by it at work for years.
