    Default VXRD Problem......

Guys, I might have a problem with the VXRD......

Bit of a long one this....

Last week, whilst heading over to Marshalls of Leicester, a warning light came up on the dashboard.

It was the yellow symbol which shows an oil can with a wavey line underneath. So I guessed it was oil pressure, or oil level warning.

So, although the oil level seemed low (not below the minimum on the stick) I topped it up with a quarter of a litre. The oil light then dissapeared and I thought nothing of it.

    Until today.......

I was out with VectraV6CDTi (Andy) showing him how quick the VXRD can be , and whilst accelerating uphill, I suddenly lost power, and spotted heavy greyish smoke bellowing out from the exhausts.. Not so I couldnt see through it, but noticable enough to put two and two together, and for it to cause me concern. No warning lights on the dash !! and the temperatures were normal.

It reminded me of the old days, when I used to just keep topping up the oil in my MKII ford escort rather than do a full oil change. The oil then 'broke down' to such a point that it burned at high revs and produced smoke out the exhaust.

    Any ideas ???

Also, when I got back home, I did another oil check and all was fine. I then went out again and it seemed much better and power was back to normal (but there was still some smoke, not as bad, but still there).

The oil was changed in September (as part of its first service) and I've done around 8-9,000 miles since.

Do I just need to get a full oil change, or could it be something more sinister ??

I'd be surprised if it was using a lot of oil steve... but the maximum level on the dipstick to the light coming on is just over a litre..so it'd have to burn a lot..if it was oil it would be a blue smoke, not grey.. i wonder if that was just fuelling..especially if it settled down again.. if it was burning a lot of oil it would be doing it permanently.. not when it felt like it..

top the oil up and bring it tomm and i'll have a squint for you if you like..

    Thanks Mark...

I wasnt going to post anything and just have a chat with you tomorrow, but I thought if I opened up the conversation, maybe someone else might have an answer.

We'll give it a kicking tomorrow, see if we can replicate it !!

    OK....

Before a hard run, I ALWAYS drive like miss daisy, and I mean like miss daisy, until the temperature gets to 'normal'. This is exactly what I did this time round as well, so drove for about 15 minutes, covered about 3-4 miles (guess)

I then went around a small island reasonable quick, but low revs... then down the duel carriageway (normal accelleration), then off the exit ramp onto another island, round the island and then booted it hard up the entrance ramp, back onto the duel carriageway.. Its then that the problem happened... half way up the ramp... lost power.... exhaust smoke out the rear !!
