it is not a requirement at all.. if it's fitted it has to be legal, but if it's not there it's not an issue

No specific requirement for a spare wheel - more & more cars don't have them - Porsche Boxter for example. Think of all the folk that do a LPG conversion with one of those donut tanks that sits in the spare wheel well.

Carry a can of tyre weld tho' - and your AA card

Interestingly enough, if you remove your rear seatbelts and buckles, spare wheel and rear wiper it will pass!

Even more interestingly, if you remove the windscreen completely it will pass. (However, under construction and use regulations our friend Paul (MLC) would like a little word with you as you tootle along the M1 with the wind in your hair)

Rear wiper and spare wheel are not testable items anyway.

I agree with GSi3.2 - I thought if it was there, it had to be legal, but if it was missing, there was no problem.

Good job really, as apparently the spare wheel well in the estate won't take an 18" or 19" wheel....is that really true?

    Sorry....

The condition of the spare tyre is not a testable issue. An mot tester will not even look at a spare wheel. Under construction and use regulations if a spare wheel is carried it must be legal, but for the MOT, not required. In fact if you presented a vehicle for test and the spare wheel was right down to the cords, the tester wouldn't bat an eyelid, it ain't testable.(well not strictly true cos I would advise on it)

It won't even take a full-size 17" wheel. It's the width that it won't take as the well is shallower than in the Vec C (due to the level load space of the estate). Same with the Signum - so we're stuck with the crappy spacesavers!

The VXR doesn`t come with a spare, just a can of foam and a pump ... I have put a 19" wheel with a 235/35 in there so fits in the hatch hole, though the carpet doesn`t lie completely flat now, but not an issue and it will settle a bit i think ...
