Default 1.8 - VVTi or not - how good are they?

As the title really, not much seems to be said about these engines apart from they aren't worth tuning massively. Whats reliabilty like, real world performance and what mpg do you get? I dont have this engine in either of my vauxes, but I whenever I encounter one on the open road I'm truly impressed by their performance.

Also has anyone gone from the old 1.8 to the new 1.8 VVTi? whats the difference in ownership like?

not really a fair comparison though mate. You canned the 1.8 and then said it only gave you the same MPG as your GSI. Well what do you expect, you were canning it. What were you expecting???

Isn't the new VVTi around 140bhp. I thought the whole point of the varaible valve timing was to make it more fuel efficient? Loads of these have just come off Vx Fleet and there's some bargains to be had. 06 plate, 1.8 VVTi SRi, colour sat nav - £9995

Probably cos the torque is higher up the rev range so you have to hammer it to get it moving.

The old 1.8 prob will feel quicker due to this.

If you raced the two though the vvt would pull away as the rpm builds up.

My sis has a Honda VTi & if you rev it really high it is fast, but annoying every day as unless you do so it feels gutless.

well, hopefully the members on here that have the new VVTi engine will comment and give us their opinion of their motors. I've not anything bad about it until now.

VauxhallVectraMatt has recently upgraded from the old 1.8 unit to the new VVTi. Drop him a PM Ian and hear it from the horses mouth.

beat me to it with your edit..

i wasn't really expecting it to pull like the Gsi Alex..but it just 'wouldn't go' at all, the 140 was to only be found when it was 'on cam' and this was right at the top of the rev range..below 3000 it is dead..and show it a hill on the M-way and we where in 4th with 3 adults in the car...

My brothers 03 1.8 club has more get up and go and better torque than the facelift i had that week... perhaps it was a bad car??.. who knows?

    Vehicle : Jaguar XF 3.0D V6

I have a 1.8 'normal' and had the VVT as a hire car once (i have a lot of hire cars, as I travel a fair amount with work) It was definitely quicker than mine. It defo pulled better and accelerated quicker.

But there again all hire cars do. As you don't mind caning them a bit more than your own car. he he.

i used to own a 1.8 p reg vectra and now ive got a 54 reg 1.8vvt and it is more powerful when the revs are high. ive done about 130 in it and in the old one it would only do about 115. the vvt is also more economical. my stepdad drives a 55reg 1.6 zafira and i get more mpg out of mine!
