Default Any web designers here?: My first website done!!!

I had been dabbling around, on and off with Namo WebSuite 2006 for a bit, trying to get it round my head.

My father owns a driving school and had asked me one night "Can you do a website for me?".

I said "Yeah, no problem", without thinking.

Finally came up with this, its pretty basic using a template from Namo, but I'm quite pleased with the outcome and he seems to be over the moon with it.

    www.firstdriving.co.uk

Registered the domain name with a webhost called 123reg.co.uk and they seem to be pretty good so far.

So, any web design/HTML code gurus here?.

Could do with some advice on a few things, specifically about getting the site noticed on search engines, meta tags etc.

I've got Dreamweaver Studio 8 sat here, installed on my laptop, but I gave it a go this afternoon and it confused the hell out of me after using Namo.

Dreamweaver is what I use and it's very good. I don't know Namo, but it's possibly more wizard driven?, but Dreamweaver will be soooo much more powerful in what it can do.

As above, the menus on the left are showing as white boxes to me too.

The links once you have clicked on them, you have to click outside the buttons before you can click on a link again.

Looking good. Remember though the biggest mistake of first time web designers is trying to be too active on the webpage. Meaning too much movement and special fx. But you kept that to a minimum

Also the Register of Institute logo is very hard to see clearly, things like that must be crystal clear as it is an important thing.

Constructive critisism there mate keep up the good work

Dreamweaver is a very good tool, especially as you can code and view live which is a good thing

    Agree there with D

Yep, echo that and didn't say above. Needs to be clearer IMO as well.

Yep, as much as WYSIWYG is good, there's no substitute for looking at the code and making tweaks that you just can't do in WYSIWYG.

Thanks for the feedback guys, appreciate it.

Are any of you browsing the site using Firefox?.

The Flash buttons going white seem to be a prob for some Firefox users as I've heard back from a few folks on the Aprilia RSV forums who have experienced the same prob?.

I'll clean up that Register of institute logo too, its been bugging me as well!!!.

Yep, using Firefox here and I got the white buttons. Looks okay when I view it in IE.

That would indicate that your Namo software is not generating clean code. It's generating code that is partly proprietary to IE and not the W3 standard. You want the code to be viewable by as many browsers as possible and therefore it needs to be W3 complaint.

I'd have a look at your code for you to see what the issue is, but currently I've had rather too many and am slightly so I may not be of much help!

I use IE7.... Always design to Microsoft products. Mainly due to that is what most normal users use.

Logos wise make sure backgrounds match your backgrounds on your webpage too

It looks fine (IE6), although I have to click twice to activate each button on the LHS, which isn't normal.
