Well new plugs and thermostat fitted. Massive improvement on start up this morning, hardly any smoke at all..altho the old plugs were still functioning?
Apparently the noise on start up/tick over is down to the botom pulley which now needs to be changed

How strange! I didn't think the glows were used until it got below -3 or something. But if the light on the dash comes on surely that means they are being used. My issue seems to get worse as the temp gets colder.

I tested glow plugs the other night and when the multimeter was on 200ohms they all read 0001.

I get white diesel smelling smoke and it sounds like 3 cylinders for about 10-15 seconds on idle or it vanishes as you drive away/apply throttle.

Cleaning throttle body and replacing leak off pipes tomorrow. Wish I could get to the bottom of this!

I would say to replace the glow plugs, what gave you got to lose? Other than that, could it poss be an injector problem?

This is true - if tomorrows efforts don't do anything I will be tempted to change glows. Only thing I can think of is injector seals, the car runs sweet as a nut any other time. Even warm starts

Check the video in the first post of this thread and compare with your starter motors performance.
also make sure your battery is 100% with a drop test done at a Starter & Alternator repairers
    not Halfords or Quick fit

ive noticed when the coolant temp sensor was disconected the glow plugs would stay on longer and the car would start a lot easier ,So i replaced the coolant temp sensor but no digfference,is there a way i could fit a timer relay to the coolant temp sensor wire so to keep the glowplugs on longer
