Check the list of possible faults in the first post of this thread, especially fuel leak off pipes.
A bad stater motor will kill the battery as it shorts outs internally.
Can I just say a big thank you for this.
Bought a Signum the other week and it was very difficult to start and was beginning to fear that I'd bought a dud.
New starter motor fitted on Wednesday by my friendly mechanic and now it starts like a dream
This winter my Vectra 1.9CDTI 8v has been a struggle to start, to be honest pulling the temperature sensor connector off in order to get the glowplugs to run for longer did help a little.
Fortunately I have a clamp ammeter so I checked cranking current... nearly 400a! The starter motor in my car has been noisy for over 70,000 miles but has never been a problem until recently. Got a brand new starter motor from an Ebay seller, fitted today... starts quietly and instantly! I doubt these engines need glowplugs at all in the UK... providing they crank fast in the cold!
Old starter motor has loads of sideplay, utterly knackered front bearing...
hi all new to this site but having the same probs cold starting its a 120 bhp 1.9 8v 2005 engine
it takes so long to start when cold lots of white/grey smoke but when it does start its fine and when hot its ok
have replaced glow plugs, new starter , battery seems fine as does altanator
however the battery look smaller than the box and only 70amp
could it be the battery or the post/pre heat module
any help would be great as its doing me head in now
I would try it with heavy jump leads from another car or try another battery... I imagine your engine is cranking slowly... as mentioned above I drove mine for a long time with a defective starter. So I well remember the white smoke and stink on cold starts, with the new starter and faster cranking this no longer happens. It might also be worth using a clamp meter to check the cranking current... my one was drawing nearly 400amps.. if yours is in the region of 200amps and still sluggish it is probably the small battery. BTW mine has a 95ah battery and that does not fill the tray either...

Engine: Z19DTH (150hp), DPF removed, EGR blanked and programmed.
-New parts: battery, starter, timing belt, glow plugs, thermostat, temp sensor, intake manifold, throttle body
-Used parts from working engine: MAP, MAF, injector return lines, glow plug timer relay
Notice: old glow plug from cyl. 2 was black. Glow plug wiring tested and working.
Warm start (engine or air temp over 10°C):
Video
Cold start (engine coolant temp +1°C):
Video
-Lots of white smoke
-Bad idle
At -15°C (or colder) or temp sensor wire removed (longer glow) -> No problem.
Any ideas?
Found it!!!
My throttle pedal was giving p1120 and cleaning contacts didn't help. Removing and cleaning contacts of UEC (fuse/relay box next to the battery) fixed pedal AND my cold start problem.
Your cure still working @FinFox?
Mine had stopped doing it, but its now started again...Thinking you might be onto something as no real voltage coming through glowplug relay (despite being brand new) which suggests dirty contacts upstream.
