Battery light on and flat battery.

Hi people I need urgent advise.

Tonight my 2005 1.9 cdti 8v has died.

Symptoms look like alternator issues as my battery is good.

Basically battery light came on while running , had everything on heated seats, blowers and heated rear glass. Drove back to inlaws and powered steering went as I pulled onto their drive.

So I'm 100 miles from home would a fully charged good battery get me home? In day light not using any gadgets??? I have break down cover if it fails.

defo a duff alternator in my experience... if you have access to tools remove it and take it somewhere tomorrow for exchange or refurb.. Seems like your on the sofa tonight mate..

It's a real pain come here to help outlaws move so no access to tools. Car started again ok but battery light came on after 10 mins.

So it's recovery home or fully charged battery and see if I can make it.

sounds very similar to when my alternator failed. I don't think it's a good idea to go 100 miles on battery only as lot of the systems will be shutdown along the way.

I don't think you will make it Ben.. Get the recovery people out now so at least you can wait somewhere warm etc

Just a quick up date. Tested battery voltage with a meter and it's only 11.5 volts while running. So I know I'm not getting any charge. Belts fine and earth cable is tidy. So looks like recovery home tomorrow and see the how 2 on alternator replacement looks a bit fiddly. Any tips. I have purchased said alternator and new belt. It's the more expensive one due to all the extras on the elite.

Update. Called rac out this morning. They said we will change your alternator and belt as you have them. Better to have our mechanic on site for a few hours than £400 for a recovery.

So drinking tea as he fits it. Fingers crossed.
