confused Vectra GSI 3.2V6 Warm Idle Problem

OK, my Vectra has develped an irritating idle problem. I'm not very technical but will try to explain as best I can. Any help much appreciated...

Engine starts from cold no problem. Seems to idle fine until after about 20mins of driving. Normally it warm idles at around 600rpm but just lately it's developed a problem... It will settle at 600rpm then suddenly drop to 500rpm then jump back upto 600rpm, then down to 500 and so on. Sometimes this is accompanied with what seems like a random misfire too.

This is what I've done so far:

    1) Emptied a bottle of fuel system cleaner into a full tank and ran the whole lot through.

    2) Cleaned the MAF sensor with spray can "electrical contact cleaner"

    3) Dismantled the air intake upto the throttle body. Used spray can "fuel injection intake cleaner" to blast away the crud which could be seen around the circular throttle valve. I wasn't brave enough to remove the throttle body though so might still be dirty on the other side.

    4) With the engine idling, I sprayed the "fuel injection intake cleaner" into the air intake. I thought maybe the problem was a dirty idle control valve and the cleaner would be sucked through and clean away any crud there.

I don't know what else it could be. The car is just over 3 years old, fully serviced with 45K on the clock.

I've had a look at some other threads and think maybe I should check the EGR valve next. Where is the EGR valve? Is it easy to remove and clean or should I get a garage to do this?

It sounds like the air control valve it is situated on the side of the throttle body, If you remove it and give it a clean out with carb cleaner it should do the trick, Mark gsi will no doubt confirm the problem, I don,t know if there is a "how to" on it. you could PM Mark and ask him for a "how to" if you are not sure how to remove it.

I'd go with Ed on this one as well... just cleaning the butterfly won't really effect the idling.. you'll have to strip off the Inlet throttle body and remove the ICV to give it a proper deep cleaning

I haven't had time to properly clean the throttle body and ICV just yet and I'm sorry to say this morning things got a little stranger... I started her up and now both the ABS and Traction Control lights stay permanently on, even whilst moving. Obviously this indicates a fault with both these systems but I'm wondering if these new problems are in some way connected with the original idling problem. Could they all be connected? Maybe a split hose somewhere that has been getting worse or something like that? Seems strange that both ABS and TC should go at the same time. Anyway, I'm taking her into Vauxhall Friday for them to have a look. I hope it isn't going to be too expensive!!! I've had this GSi for two years now and I've always been really pleased with it.

The ABS and TC problem has miraculously fixed itself! Probaly just a dirty wheel sensor which was cleared by the heay rain?

as the sensor is contained within the hub bearing assy internally...i very much doubt it.. more likely the connection on the inner arch thats at fault.. you could try some WD40 in the socket if there's any moisture..
