    Default Subwoofer Murder!

There has been a Murder in the Boot of My car!

Driving along quite happily, music blaring out like normal, notice this odd smell coming from the car... hmm methinks. Get to where im going and the smell is still there.

Open the boot - no sign of anything odd - press down on one of the 2 subs in the boot... lo and behold there is smoke seeping out from the sides.

    Oh Dear

Managed to bodge it out of the box and I was overwhelmed by fumes and eye burning smoke. (smoke coming from the lacquer(sp?) that the coil is covered in)

I think its dead - im not too sure. The Cone is still free to move - which is a good sign really, but it has since turned from a 4Ohm sub to a 7 1/2 Ohm sub lol.

Lesson: Never Play excessively Loud, Low Bass Lines through 12'' Subs. But its Fun to though hehe

    HMMM

So is this a Good excuse to get those 15's

Ive done that aswell, the smell is very strong even more when the drivers window is open because it seems to circulate the air around the car more. Running your subs hard will cause the cone to get hot and can burn out and stop working. You may be lucky though and turned it down just in time.
You can over power a sub by have the gain control to high on the amp, or the amp does not have enough power and that to can blow them.

    Best of luck mate

Ah wouldnt be the first time Ive done it, ive had many experiences blowing up subs.

I think it was more to do with the fact that it was an Extremely low frequency, most times its fine with anything - if anything got warm it was the amp.

Cant think of the name of the track at the minute, but I do know that It is on an MTX Bass CD

I'd check the wiring myself, you may have hooked in wrong, or more likely you have a cable thats rubbed against an edge somewhere and shorted it out. hth.

We smoked a JL 15" sub good n proper a few years ago. One night in the local boy racers hang out we sat the sub in the middle of the car park, used the cone to contain the flamable liquid we poured into it & pooofff, up in smoke it went

I did also enjoy wiring up a standard vauxhall tweeter to a sub output terminal on a demo stand in our shop, whacking a bass cd on & timing how many milliseconds it would last.

Rock On lol... I havent had the desire to do that yet! I think they will meet their end soon - Think of some diabolically evil way to kill a Sub - Again

Christ, Boss Sound, I remember them. Used to sell them at a shop I worked at. Boomerang I called them. You knew they'd come back!!
