Personally I've had nothing but problems with Maxtor drives and have had good experiences with Western Digital, just because you've had one drive go down after a few months don't assume they are all bad - nearly all servers that I look after that started out with Maxtor drives have now been changed to WD or Seagate as all the drives failed by a year old!

Maxtor drives should get better now they have been bought by Seagate.

Isn't it weird, I've owned 4 maxtor ones over the last 7 yrs, and all are still 100%, yet this WD one fails after such a short time, I guess you either gets a good one or a bad one.

Not sure if you know this, but there is an issue with Maxtor sata drives when used with nVidia nForce 3 or 4 chips.

Hopefully I should get it exchanged today, or at least taken back in for viewing anyway, geez that chkdsk takes time, I had it running a day and a half, sadly it still didn't resolve it for me.

Think you were just unlucky mate, I run a 160Gb Maxtor and a 200Gb WD, both drives have been flawless for over 2 years now.

I've used both makes in several PC's i've built over the last few years and have to say they are IMO the 2 most reliable brands i've used (not 1 failure in 4 years and about 20 PC's).

I've used Seagates before and i've had 2 fail out of 5 so stick to Maxtor and WD.

Most people in the business recommend Western Digital & nothing else. Avoid Seagate at all costs IMHO.

In over 8 years i have only had 1 HDD die on me and it was a Maxtor just before Xmas, died totally didnt show in bios or anything, wouldnt normally have been bothered but it had all of my photos on for last 5 years and an image of my XP backup

Took it out and stuck it in freezer overnight sealed in an airtight bag, connected it back up next day and lasted just long enough to rip all contents off it to another drive

I did find a new use for it at the weekend though when i needed a hammer and couldnt be bothered to go in the garage
