    Default 2.0 T Cold Starts

I have a concern about cold starts with my 2.0T engine. When I acquired the car, it was as noisy as a bag of spanners on start up, which was diagnosed and resolved (eventually) 15 months ago with replacement of the Multi Tensioner and Belt, similar to examples in previous posts on the subject.

The noise was described to me at the dealers as "chatter" and I was told that it was caused by insufficient oil in one or more of the valves at startup time and was common to the 2.0T engine in both Vauxhall and Saab guises. What, if anything, has this to do with the belt/tensioner?

The noise has mostly been absent although occasionally present on cold start but disappears during start up before moving off or certainly within a mile or two. Lately it has been more evident but never like a bag of spanners. I gave the car a good old run out on Tuesday but that had no effect. The noise was still there the next day.

An independant garage has told me that this phenomenon is common to turbo engines, and this was borne out by someone who has a Subaru Impreza WRX who said an oil change is the only way to quieten it down. But the Vectra 2.0T is no Impreza WRX.

My car was serviced in October and the oil changed (5w-30). Should I be concerned? I've booked the car in next week at the dealers (the warranty runs out at the end of this month). Do I need to put up with this occasional "chatter" or is the dealer talking ******? If this phenomenon is normal then fine. Am I being too fussy? All I want to do is drive the car.

Never had anything like this with the 1.8 Active. Any advice/comments would be most welcome. Thanks

if i were you i would take the car back to the dealer, at least for them to have a record of the fault once the warranty runs out. if their is a problem you'll have more of an argument if they've seen the car before and said that there was nothing wrong.

then after that i would give it an oil change and see what happens, fairly cheap and healthy for the car.

you'll have to do that fairly soon though whilst we still get the cold mornings.

Thanks for that. I'll take it on board. What puzzles me re the oil is that the car was serviced and the oil changed 1500 miles ago. It looks as good as new, and the engine burns very little to no oil, unlike ,(reputedly, dare I say it) some of the Vectra diesels. Cheers

    You've started it now.

My 'dare I say it', diesel doesn't use any oil.

another thing to consider is these 2.0T engines use a hydraulic timing chain tensioner. it could be this that you hear rattling.. i think that unless it's the tensioner on the multibelt failing again ( not unheard of)..it'd be high on my list of 'probables'.. you may have to play detective on this one.. if the noise seems to be mainly coming from the top of the engine then i'd agree with hydraulic followers sticking, and an engine oil flush may well help free them ( if one hasn't collapsed).. BUT if it's from the side then it's either the multibelt or the timing chains tensioners.. there are 2 chains on these engines.. one drives the cams, the other drives the balancer shafts ( thats why the engines are so smooth)..SAAB engines are well known for wearing timing chains out at around 80K miles, but some do go sooner..

If it goes about 2 or 3 seconds after startup and is on the belt end of the engine then it's chain tensioners...if it's top end then it's followers..if it's belt then it may take even longer to stop rattling..

I did say 'reputedly', according to comments made about the old-type engines especially the 2.2DTI, but never the V6, apparently.

I've got a tap from the top of the engine on the siggy, sounds like a lazy follower to me but mine only does it with a warm engine

Also if i slow right down in 2nd gear to go over a speed bump and then accelerate away i get a loud noise like an undertray vibrating for a second or so which i guess could be the old veebelt and pulley

Off to the Stealers me thinks.......

God, you know your stuff. Thanks. Bit more complicated than my old 1996 Astra 1.4LS then.

I've done the odd car or two... ...

yep, these engines are quite a novel design.. not many cars use balancer shafts these days..don't know why as they're usually the smoothest..
