    Default Signum - Who can sit on the rear centre seat?

    Hello all,

    Is that rear centre seat for kids of certain ages/weights?

    Many thanks

    Thanks for the info, It's just that my Wife needs to be able to take:

    14 week old
    4yr old
    6yr old

    Looking into the law i think i can take the 6yr old without a safety seat in the centre.

    What do you all think?

    Thanks again

    Might be able to swap out the rear seat for a Vec estate one, ask Duncan and Cabby for advice on it, they will probably know.

    Personally I wouldnt take a child in the car without a safety seat.
    There are so many morons out on the road, I wouldnt take the chance.
    But then thats probably because of the job I do and unfortunately I see the results when it goes wrong. If you can fit a seat then do.

    The centre seat only has a height restriction - can't recall what it is exactly but it's marked on the seat/underside. Height limit is simply due to the fact that the seat is higher than the other two so Vx don't want people smacking their head on the roof/getting neck injuries if the car is in an accident/roll.

    In relation to a six year old, the new law states....

    Children aged 3 and above, until they reach EITHER their 12th birthday OR 135cm in height

    Children over 3 and up to 135 cms in height or the age of 12 MUST use a child restraint, with very few exceptions.

    In the Front Seat

    The child MUST use the correct child restraint.

    In the Rear Seat

    The child MUST use the correct restraint, where seat belts are fitted.

    There are three exceptions where there is not a child seat available. In each case the child MUST use the adult belt instead. They are -

    1) in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle;

    2) if the child is travelling on a short distance for reason of unexpected necessity;

    3) if there are two occupied child restraints in the rear which prevent the fitment of a third.

    In addition, a child 3 and over may travel unrestrained in the rear seat of a vehicle if seat belts are not available.

    So if you have child seats in the other two rear seats, your six year old will be legally allowed to travel in the middle seat with no seat - as there's no way you'd get a child seat on the centre seat.

    Full details of new laws and child seats.

    Height restrictions for the centre "seat" are min. 1,50 m - max. 1,75. Another reason (for the min.) is that the seatbelt is not adjustable AND that a child seat on this centre seat is not allowed !

    I thought all Elites had the transponder fitted? If so you will get a seat type symbol light up to the left of the milage and then go out again. It will stay on when the child seat is in place
    Now I need a turbo to keep up!
