    Default Black Number Plates

Hi does anyone know what the Law is on black number plates with silver lettering, I saw a black Range Rover with them on the other day and they looked well smart thinking about getting some done but someone at work thinks they may only be legal on cars built before 1973, the Range Rover i saw them on was a new one and i was on the M3 at the time behind a police car with the Range Rover going past the police and myself and he never got pulled is it a bit of a grey area or does anyone know thanks.

Oh and does anyone know where i can get a set from near Aldershot.

Yep, you're right Fearns. Black plates can only be displayed on cars registered before 1973. Have a look here and scroll down to 'Tradional Plates'

As far as I can remeber - Black plates are for reg's prior to 1973. The reg allows the plate to be black regardless of the age of the vehicle - Normal rules apply about making it appear to be younger though!!

Just had a thought (I know - potentially dangerous!! ) With the new law on supplying number plates, I wonder if they'll refuse to supply a black plate once they see it's for a car after 1973? I don't know if the supplier can get done themselves for supplying plates that aren't legal? - especially as their details will be stuck on the bottom of the plate and be obvious if you got pulled.

Guess you'll find out when you go and try and get them!
