    Default Your best ride!!

Talking to someone at work today about the most exciting ride (steady on!!) you've ever had in a vehicle.

Well without doubt mine was when I was in the Navy. Used to fly in helicopters like they were taxis and even went in a Harrier. But nothing beat the times I flew in one of these.

The good old Hawker Hunter. I'm afraid a 3.2 Vectra just doesn't cut it in this company.

my most recent was in the elise at trax, i really didnt know they handled so well. I thought i could drive fast but im an old granny in comparison.

Ive taken a Caterham 1800 16v around Mallory Park for 10 laps. Thats was fun.

Not the fastest but most nerve racking was flying a helicopter over newcastle. When the guy says 'ok, you have control' you forget everything he'd previously taught you.

My mate had a good one though, hes a sergent in the RAF and is part of the service crew who look after one of the tornado squadrons. Every so often his name comes round for a go in one, similar to MLC. Totally jealous.

When I was in the falklands, I had a jaunt in a phantom jet when they went to escort a jumbo jet into Stanley Airport. All because I had given an RAF Sergeant a go in a BV206, which is like a snow cat, so he sorted it for me to go up in the Phantom. No other word for it but AWESOME!

Actually Ian, it was quite common when I was down there. It was all pretty lax (long hair, mixed dress uniform etc), and all the three services worked very closely. If you did someone a favour, it was returned, and from an RAF point of view, they would normally try and get you a go in the Phantoms.

That's all changed down there now Gary. It's all RSM's, SWO's walking around bolloking people. But of course we're no longer at Stanley we're all at RAF MPA (Mount Pleasant Airfield). It's just like being at a unit at home except everyone goes out on the p1ss after work instead of going home.

I worked 24hours on, 24 hours off and loved every minute of it.

Anyway back to the subject of the thread - My thrill has to be driving through the country side near RAF Fairford in a six wheeled Range Rover Fire Tender called a TACR II (3.5 ltr V8 weighing 4.2 tonnes). It was a blue light run for about 10 miles and were on route to a Mig 29 Fulcrum aircraft crash. It was the Russian Mig 29 display that went horribly wrong. The reason it was my thrill ride was because I wasn't driving at the time and the guy who was driving was the best I've seen. Not once was I scared and we were flying! We were even on the national news.
