    Default heavy oil consumption

    hi all,

have been browsing the forum for a while now and getting some really useful info but havnt said a word so firstly hello! i've got a 2003 1.8 sri. it went for its 60,000 mile service about a week and a half ago. yesterday the oil light came on after driving for about half an hour, so i stopped, left it 15 mins and checked the level. to my horror only a drip of oil on the dipstick!

i've done 1000 miles since the service but surely it shouldnt need topping up already?

scarily the same thing happened just before the new year, i topped the oil up and didnt have a problem until now.

am i wrong in thinking theres a serious problem

your help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks, seb

there prob isn't if the level stays correct after you've filled it back up again..

IF the level after you've done a topup doesn't move until it's next draining, then i'd lean towards the fact that the fitter who did the job filled it by volume, not by the level on the stick, and prob didn't check the stick afterwards..

But if it's using about a litre of oil ( thats the dipsticks reading scale) every 1,000 miles then i'd start by looking for leaks, evidence of oil staining on the engine etc, even blueish smoke when the car is revved when it's cold..as that level of consumption is a bit higher than i'd expect to see..

Also, which oil light came on.. the red one or the yellow one?

Oh, And to the site by the way.... why not pop up another 'hello' post in the main introduction section..

    thanks for your reply

i went to vx today and bought a litre of oil. spoke to a guy there that was really helpful, he's booked me in for next week and advised that they'll check it for free and if it was their fault reimburse me for the oil.

i've checked where i park during the day and at home in the night and there doesn't seem to be any oil on the ground. funnily enough just after putting iridiums in on the weekend i could smell oil burning but thought it may've been because i disturbed things in the engine, havn't smelt anything since.

it's the yellow light that's comming on, seems to be after i've been driving for 20 - 30 mins. not sure if its just me being paranoid but
the engine seems a bit gritty aswell.

for now i'm going to keep an eye on the oil level but will hopefully find out if theres any major problems next week. i'll let you know the outcome anyway!

    thanks for your help

    Thumbs down

    hi all,

vx topped me up with a litre of oil and advised me to come back if i have any problems... never guess what? same has happened again! yellow oil light on and no reading on the dipstick. i'm starting to worry now as shes definately loosing oil.

does anyone have an idea how this could be happening? it doesn't look like its been leaking where i park in the day / night.

i'm going to have to book it back in at vx i'm dreading what they have to come back with... i'm assuming its going to be something major

    absolutely gutted!
