Last year I had the air con on my 1.8 recharged and was told it had no leaks however after about 2 months or so it stopped getting cold. Are there any things I can check myself before shedding out yet more cash.

Either take it to Quickfit as there machine will diagnose if there is a leak, or to a Air Con specialist who will put fluoro dye into the system, this will then show if there are any leaks.
It is possile that you have holed your condenser.
Go to Kwik Fit, if it doesn't work, you don't pay anything. If it just needs coolant & oil, it'll cost you £49. Or wait until next winter as its only £36 then.
Have consideration for the deaf, if you're gunna fart, make it smell !
