Help needed

I went out to car this morning, put key in ignition and nothing, no lights on dash, car wouldnt start, alarm started going off, central locking wouldnt work, had to manually use key.

Just got a jumpstart and car started for a few minutes, however all electrics have gone off, car now wont start again and radio keep coming on on its own when no key in ignition? Also no power steering?

Any ideas, driving me mad! Do I need new battery as dont want to pay out for one when it mighnt be that?

I would hazzard a guess at alternator but someone with more know how will be along soon to help out in sure.

A dying alternator will cause all sorts of weird electrical behaviour.

Do you own a multimeter?

If so check the battery first to see how many volts its holding. Should be between 11.8 - 12.2 i think.

If you can get the car going gain then put all things that could put a drain on the alterator like aircon. Lights heating then measure the voltage again. Should read around 14 or more.

If its lower than that then it s most likely alternator.

If im wrong in this please correct me. Passing info on i got told before.
