Default What to look out for. Going to see a car tomorrow night.

    Hi all.

Going to have a look at a150bhp 1.9 diesel on an 06 plate tomorrow night.

What should I look out for on the engine please?

    The car has done 126k

My last vec c was an 08 in the same engine! But it was a company car.

Things that spring to mind are

With engine running slowly depress clutch pedal and listen for a loud clatter as it normally indicates excessive dual mass flywheel wear, cost for repair to clutch/flywheel/slave cylinder are between £500 - £700
Remove engine dressing and check swirl bar is still on and not coming loose
Check all coil springs for breaks
Make sure all lights come and go out correctly as any warning lights are now an mot fail
Check air con works as vecs/signums are prone for stones piercing condenser/radiator
Get them to start from cold and check for smoke in first few seconds

Sticky thermostat, take it a good run make sure it gets to between 85 and 90 degrees, check the swirl valves and make sure the flywheel doesn't rattle on tickover.

-Main things are DMF(dual mass flywheel) listen out for any knocking/banging noise at ide or when the clutch is at biting point.
-Check to make sure the swirl bar is on and the pots are not dirty with oily gunk.
-Make sure the cambelt and water pump have been changed.
-Listen out for any clunking or banging noises when going over bumps as this can indicate warn bushes/parts

IM sure other members will be able too add things aswell

Black/dark grey smoke is quite normal but light grey/white can indicate faulty glow plug/s or like mine a duff inlet manifold.

    Question.
How do you remove the engine dressing? Never needed to open my last bonnet! Being a company car!
