some will say clean it and blank it off
clean it means it will work better, mpg may go up.
But its inside the manifold that will be glogged up (depending on your car i think its 06 and back, before they got their act together to do something about it) i.e. swirl flaps bar falls off etc.
Blank it off means that no exhaust gases will recirculate through the engine, you can blank it with or without a hole in the blank - without a hole, need to get t your ecu mapped out as it will show the EML on dash, with a hole no light - but still recirculates.
Its upto you if you blank or not - dont blank it will get all dirty again, i havent blanked mine - as i wanna see how blocked it gets over x amount of miles since i cleaned it.
HTH
Cheers for that mate. I remember cleaning one on my old van years ago...that was pretty dirty too. Think i will try and clean it, its an 08 Vectra C, bog standard as manufactured. Just want to keep her running as she is..60000 miles so far so good. Thanks again burnswood.
You dont have anything to lose by cleaning - which is a good thing![]()
WHen i done mine - car was at around 70K give or take a few K, and i got the impression it had never been done before - the 'hole' was the size of a 5p - when it should be about the size of i dunno a reasonable orange lol - took ages and a tine of carb cleaner later and it looked alright - there wasnt any bad things occuring on the dash, or feel to the car - but i kept putting it off and off and then bit the bullet
I think i will take mines off again next weekend to see what i think - 5000 miles has done to it. Had the TB of today and as no where near as bad as the EGR
Dave
Excuse my ignorance....but whats a "TB" ? lol.
its cool, TB is throttle body. What engine do you have? mines is a 1.9 diesel and the TB sits to the right of the EGR (connected)
All i know is its 1.9CDTI 150hp SRI 08 plate. She was fitted with a brand new genuine GM Vauxhall Inlet Manifold around 6 months ago by the main dealers because the swirl flaps may have been sticking. ( i didnt pay as it was list price £600 and under warrenty ) Just bought new air/oil filters and new oil today and looking to get me hands dirty in the next week see...thought those days were long gone !!! lol.
I always thought that the inlet manifold/swirl flaps etc were guffed for pre maybe 07 plates and that mines just missed out on the newer version of the manifold that apparantly doesnt cause as many problems as before - ive pretty much convinced myself that mines is on the way out - althogh the bar is still on, and moves slightly, no error codes or symptoms to report as yet - i wouldnt even attempt it on my own, but at that price to fix its gonna be a few months of eating dry bread and crisps i think!
You will be able to see /assume what state the old manifold was in, by how much carbon was built up in your egr when you take it off - unless they cleaned that out for you at the time - but who knows if they would be so kind to?
