Is it okay to leave a 5p size stone chip in primer over night before painting and the other thing is it is raining now and can't cover the car up ? Or will I have to sand back to bare metal and start again tomorrow ?

If the primer was dry before the rain came on, I'd reckon you will likely be ok. It may be too late for this time, but in the past if I've ever had to do anything like that and there was a chance of rain, I've used something like a plastic sandwich bag or a bit of a carrier bag and used masking tape to make a wee cover for the area affected.

The primer was on for over an hour before the rain came on ?

You will be ok to leave it just flat and paint when you can.

Think I would tend to agree. As long as he makes sure the area is properly dry before applying any colour I don't think I'd feel the need to be rubbing it down and starting again.
