Default Fiat Punto .......... Keys .

My other half has just passed her test and is going to look at a F.ix I.t A.gain T.omorrow ..... Fiat Punto Active 1.2 on a 52 reg plate .

I seem to remember from many years ago that Fiats came with one chunky Master Key and a couple of skinny spares .

Please can anyone tell me what the score is with keys from a 2002 Punto .

We don't want to find that we have to replace all the locks and immobilisers if we only get the basic keys and they stop matching up with the car .

Also any other tips are appreciated .

    Thank You .

P.S. = We are viewing the car at 4 pm today .

If you don't have the red key, and you need a new key programming, it'll cost £1000 to do. I think they have to swap the ECU or something.

Ive owned a MK2b Punto and never had a red key, there was two blue keys, no car pass etc. Family member had a MK2 punto and that was the same. Mrs has a new version punto and they said there was a master key (black) with that one but if I lost it it wouldn't be a massive problem. Punto is an easy car to work on, easy to get parts for, just look out for any electric steering problems, they have a common problem where the steering motor dies, <£100 for a second hand motor and a simple swap of the motor usually sorts it, ask if the steering light has ever been on.

Def applyed to the Mk1, but not sure if it applied to the mk2. The wife has a Mk2 and we never got a brown master key.

Check the sump, they go porous at the front and leak oil all over the place, but are pretty cheap to replace, if not a bit of a fiddiliy job. Check the oil for water and visa versa as the Fire engine is prone to head gasket failure but its down to people not replacing the anti freeze, so have a look at the bottom hose and see if the hose clip has been replaced, easy to see as it should be a jubbilie clip instead of a factory pressed band. Timing belt is 50k or 5 years iirc, but they are a doddle to replace.

Wiper linkage falls off so check and see if it has gold arm linkages, a sure sign its had a Wipec conversion, only £24 off ebay if not.

    Rule of thumb

Only a fool buys a Fiat and only a madman buys an 11 year old Fiat, sway her towards a Corsa,Fiesta,Polo,Fabia but do not let her buy French or Italian cars they are money pits.

Punto has was always been the rule breaker. The wife had her Mk1 for 7 years. Only ever needed exhausts, a sump, a clutch, and normal servicing. Head gasket went just before 100K so was scrapped due to age(the punto, not the wife...). Her Mk2 has been even more reliable. All its needed is a suspension top mount as it was creaking. And at 52mpg it puts many so called "Green" eco cars to shame.
