confused Radio Removal without extreme violence !!

First off, I'm not a violent chap but after 3 evenings of sequentially removing bits from my dash I'm no nearer to removing my CCR2006 double-din unit from my pre-facelift Veccy.

So far I have the glovebox, the heater controls, the cubby holder by the ciggy light, the walnut trim which goes across the dash and the display unit out but not the cursed head unit. I am using the double-din removal tools but all I've managed to remove so far is the front off the radio on the right side and I'm slowly losing the will to install the Parrot kit I want to put in !
Can anyone advise if I go to the next stage of removing the centre console (armrest, coin holder, gear stick surround and centre dash side panels) if this will give me any more access to get leverage on the headunit please as I don't want to go through that pain for no effect.

    Any advise would be appreciated.

I removed one on DaveDrinks Luton Meet.

Don't remove just the front as you will break the clips holding it on. They are secured from the inside of the unit.

Its not like other models where the front can be removed from the unit.

I first started to use removal tools from ebay to get the radio out but it was not happening. Me and Ian Higlander could not get it out no matter how hard we tried.

We then dug up Ian's halfords removal tools and we then removed the radio with ease. I have since binned my cheap removal tools.

Try again with some decent tools mate. Im sure you will then get it out.

If it comes to it, remove the glovebox and shine a light on the black radio cage - you'll see that it isn't solid, and you can gently insert a flatblade screwdriver between the cage and the radio to lever it out of the dash. Again - be gentle doing this because if the clips aren't released then you're not going to do anything other than damage it.

Also, if you find that the release keys aren't making a good enough contact with the locking pins in the radio, you can bend a 45 degree angle in the part that you insert into the radio to give more purchase on this, basically making your keys look like this: (point of view is looking down from the mirror to the gearstick in this diagram)

    rather than this:

If you still can't release it, then using a decent sized allen key, you can manually activate the locking clips by removing the blanks either side of the dashboard and poking the allen keys down behind the trim, then levering them against the dash to push the pins in. This is an infuriating way to do it, and to be honest is not really recommended! You certainly don't need to remove the centre console though, as that will give you no better access than you already have right now unfortunately.

Well after a few more hours fettling I think know the problem. I managed to shift it forward 1/2" and on the left I can see both the locking pins, on the right I can only see the bottom one ! I have a horrible feeling that the top one has bent outwards when I pulled it out and gone the wrong way and it sticking into the cage as it will not budge any further. Even if I push it back in I don't think I can get at the right hand side. Any suggestions again ?

Either fiddle through the blanks on the right (difficult) or remove the lower dash on the drivers side (few Torx screws, pretty easy) to get roughly the same level of access as you do with the glovebox removed on the left.

Damm, looks a bit like the NCDC2013 we had to "tease" out of my motor a few weeks ago.
Good job you aren't planning on re-using it though
Glad you got the thing out in the end fella
