    Default knocking noise from suspension

Over the past couple of years my suspension has gradually started to knock increasingly loudly when passing over imperfections in road surface. I can actually feel it through the floor of the car now; The noise is akin to a loose ball-joint.

Took it for an MOT this morning expecting it to fail due to the knocking, but it passed and the tester said he couldn't find anything worn enough to cause the knocking.

Over the past two years I've replaced the front ARB bushes, drop links, and springs. But there was no reduction in the knocking following these replacements.

    Any ideas??

They looked ok when I replaced the springs last year (it was already knocking quite loudly by then). I dismantled the plastic bearing thingies, cleaned and re-greased the bearings and they turned smoothly.

I hate these sort of faults - I'd rather be diagnosing an electronic or engine fault

Any idea if it's coming from the front or the back? When does the noise appear - when driving in a straight line? Manouvering slowly? Going over bumps?

Most noticeable in straight line, when passing over uneven road surface, small potholes, etc. The front left is loudest followed by the front right, but lately the back is starting to knock a bit as well.

Knocking noise from the front suspension may be caused by worn rubber in the top mounting plate. Last week I changed the spring, schocs and top plate om my 2006 Vectra. The top plate was heavily coroded and almost useles because of no anti corrosion protective layer and too much salt on the roads in Norway. One of the broken spring almost hit the brake tube because it traveled downwards the last months. Happy now to have a car with good handling and no noise from the suspension.

I too would say top mounts. Mine need doing. They have got quite bad over the last few months or so. My anti-roll bar bushes - front and back - need doing too. They are mis-shapen and the car crunches over speed bumps. I am planning to get some Powerflex polyurethane ones soonish. I had the same at the garage too; MOT passed and no sign of what was causing the issues. The mechanic said it would be a case of replacing stuff until I cured the problem! Paul

Sometimes you get them where their just a complete nightmare to find.

For the cost of top mounts it maybe worth replacing anyway.

or even someone local to swap full leg over while you take a short drive?

Thanks guys, sounds like top mounts are the easiest/cheapest things to try first, followed by control arms.

I really didnt notice anything worn/corroded about the top mounts before - but maybe they've hardened or something. Do I also need to replace the bearing plates as well even though they seem to work smoothly?

Well, I replaced the top mounts and bearings with new ones (the old ones looked and felt fine though), replaced the crappy drop links that I got from from autovaux last year (rubbers had perished and one of the joints was starting to get loose) with Meyle HD ones, and the knocking is exactly the same as before. The springs were replaced last year and still in good condition too.

So what's next? Its quite a deep knock, and I can feel it through my feet when they are flat on the floor.

Whilst on axle stands I could see a very tiny gap between the subframe mounting rubbers and their metal lower cups. Could this be it?
