No power and very smokey, eventually spanner light comes on. 55 reg 19.cdti 150 16v 107,000 miles

Hi guys, I have a vectra at the sort of mileage things are going wrong like its going out of fashion.
The latest issue is I have had groggy performance over the last few days, getting gradually worse until grey/black smoke is spouting from the exhaust when attemting to get the car to accelerate, eventually leading to the spanner and car icon appearing on the dash.

Its worth pointing out that similar symptoms have occured before, often relating to the egr, but never this bad. Cleaning thoroughly the egr and intake manifold before now has usually sorted out performance issues, however not this time....

Heres whats been done by me already in an attempt to sort this problem out...

- Cleaned egr valve including drilling hole and knocking inside out. Inside was spotless, no need to clean.

- full service including air filter and fuel filter

- Cleaned the throttle body and chamber leading to the intake manifold. Both were snooted up with a mixture of egr soot and engine oil, couldnt believe how much had built up since i cleaned it 15,000 miles ago.

I know people have had similar issues and I was hoping someone in the know could offer some possible solutions?

Also a couple of questions, can the egr be faulty even when it appears clean? And could this be a DIESEL PUMP fault? I sincerely hope not.

It could well be the egr valve. Have you tried blanking it off?

I havent tried this as of yet, but I will tomorrow. Could it still be faulty even though everything on it is spotless?? There doesnt seem to be anything too technical about it

Yes. I had one on that was very clean. I washed it out in the sink and found water would easily flow from one side through to the other.

Thanks Ste I checked those links out, the inlet manifold one was particualarly interesting, seeing as the inside of mine is full of soot and oil (Where you cant reach it!) Everyone seems to be suspecting the EGR, It was replaced at 55,000 miles so I guess it stands to reason it could be on its way again. But would this also cause horrible smoke out the exhaust? It never has before, just poor performance

Not particularly, its around 10 miles to work. are you suspecting the egr too?
