Sounds to me like the battery is nearing the end of its life, as I noticed mine was very poor starting over when cold or after a short run
Is it is still on the original?
If so, get a DIN reading

Ironically, we have cars of almost identical age and mileage...

This confirms the battery has failed and no longer has a high enough DIN rating to start the engine

You are not supposed to use jump leads on the V6 CDTI
It is clearly stated in the handbook and anyone that has ever asked me for a jump start I have refused

A jump start should only be performed when the battery is flat and the engine won't turn over
You connect to one of the terminals on the (failed) battery and the other to the engine earthing point
When the battery on mine failed it took the dealership three attempts to start the engine, and the technician that normally deals with my car pointed out where they had gone wrong
I then had to call out the AA and this person had the same problem, and I pointed to the earthing point

Need live data to see what's going on tbh

coukd be a number of things. Temp sensor, leaky injectors, poor fuel etc etC

as for waiting for the battery to be completely flat before jump starting.
thats a sure fire way of killing ecu

as for jumping at engine earth that's standard practise.

ill jump started 100s of cars and be we had a problem

used my v6 to jump start plenty of cars too.

    abyway back on topic.

to op best get would be a live data comparison.

rail pressures, temps etc from when it starts ok to when it won't.

IMO this isn't an engine to be guessing at parts.
purely for their price an complexity to access.

you want to be sure your right
