    Default Ejection seat query

Drifting off to sleep last night after watching a programme about the 1950's Canadian Avro Arrow, my thoughts wandered to The "Officer and a gentleman" film and the training scene where the would be pilots have to exit a cockpit underwater - which led me to wonder, would an ejection seat fire underwater? Anyone know?

It would fire but the resistance of being pushed through the water like that would kill you. Everytime a pilot ejects the loose 6mm of height

Back in the 60's the RN carrierborne Blackburn Buccaneer was fitted with the Martin Baker Underwater Ejection System. The idea being to enable escape should the aircraft 'land short' or overshoot and get a tad soggy.
Rather than me harping on about it, have a read for yourself : http://www.blackburn-buccaneer.co.uk..._Ejection.html

Good question, I would agree that it would be a neck breaker if you did fire it underwater, the seat itself would probably depend on whether it's a sealed system or simply some C4 pointing the right way on the holding brackets, back then I would imagine it was a crude system that the designers had only considered it as useable while in the air.

Lol yes, I knew that one, and the zero/zero seats. The Underwater MB link was most interesting - thanks all for the replies. Good answers for an idle query.

My thoughts often wonder off to films I have seen as I go to sleep....none to do with ejector seats though lol

Interesting read though always good to learn something new!
