    Default Advice needed please.....

I managed to rip off the front nearside mudflap earlier (don't ask lol). Whilst investigating I noticed grease sprayed all round the inside of the wheel and the suspension/driveshaft components. The rubber gaitor has split. I don't know if happened a while ago or not. Anyway, is the car safe to use? and can I get away with just getting the shaft re packed with grease and replace the boot, or will I need a complete new driveshaft? Sorry for the rambling post... Thanks2013-04-07170903_zps5f68e310.jpg

PS Does anyone have a part number for the clips that hold the Vx mudflaps on please?

As you have no idea when the boot split, you can only guess what possible contamination might have got into the joint and bearings. So I think it's a matter of stripping off the old boot then cleaning and carefully inspecting the CV joint. If you're lucky you may get away with a good clean, lots of grease and a new boot.

If there are no noises coming from the CV joint then you are safe just repacking with grease (use the proper CV grease) when you replace the rubber boot.

    Back in a V6 !!!!!!!!!!!! And lovin it !!!

    As said above.

If no noise just repack and fit new boot.

Thanks. thinking about it, I don't think I'll attempt it myself. It looks fresh so I'm sure it happened yesterday, then only drove 10 or so miles home afterwards. I'll not use the car until its repaired. Hidden drains in muddy verges and large tractors don't mix.....

Is it a job someone with not a lot of experience can do? or best left to a garage?

For a novice its a messy job, getting CV grease over everything

You need the right tools to break down the CV joint assembly safely without damaging the track rod end joint and lower ball joint.
    But
I did a little Nissan Micras CV's this morning, I had to cut the track rod ends and the lower ball joints nuts off as they were all seized on solid,
fastest and cheapest solution, bear that in mind if you take it on that you might need to replaced other parts as well as the CV boot.

    Also
I dont recommend this method but it suits a lot of DIY enthusiasts
