    Default My pc is poorly

    Hello everyone,

I've not been on much & won't be for a few days, as above my computer has a fault & it turns out its the power supply thats shafted.

I'm hunting around for a new one (actually my sister is!) but it's not a "normal" one so she's having to look around a bit.

If I can get the part number off her later I'll post it on here & enlist your help in finding one if you don't mind.

She found one for £60 which seems a bit steep so she's continuing to search.

I can pop on here occasionally from the office but we're busy so I have little time.

Anyway I'm off to do some work , have a great day guys n gals

What is it about yours that's not 'normal' - and what power rating (watts) is your current one.

Some of the really hi-spec ones with all the bells and whistles can cost £50-60, but a 350W low-noise one from Maplin (for instance) is £22.99.

When I built my most recent PC, I had to spend around £50 on one to get all the connectors I needed and a high enough power rating as it needs to run several hard discs (including SCSI ones) which all take a bit of power. Maybe you're in the same boat?

Could be a size/shape issue (some smaller PSU's are expensive)

Whats the make/model of the PC?

Thanks guys, I know hardly anything about the insides of a pc. Ill let you know later what is different about mine.

My sis is pretty good, she's a programmer, I'll ask her the spec & come back later or tomorrow.

The pc is a Packard Bell, don't know the model.

The model, and more importantly the serial number, should be found on a metal plate or sticker at the back of the unit, near to the power sockets

I bought a replacement power pack for my laptop last year, and didn't get much change out of £80!

Most likely just a weird shape doing Packard Bell....

Cheaper to transplant everything into a new case for £40!

You get what you pay for with power supplies I'm afraid lads, if the computer is at least 3 yrs old then a cheap generic one for 20 quid will do, if you are running multi drives, lots of memory and a decent graphic card you will need something better, the power supply is the route cause of many comp crashes, if the rails don't supply enough to the machine at a steady rate then something drops out and thats blue screen time.

I recommend you don't get anything rated less than 500w

    Antec
    Hiper
    Thermaltake
    Enermax

These are 4 of the better ones, avoid Q-Tec ones they are ok, but when rated 550w they don't produce any more power than a 300w one, many a discussion about cheap supplies can be googled, I recommend you have a read before you buy. hth.
