Default Fault with 52 plate vectra

Hi, I have a problem with my 52 plate 2.2 vectra automatic. On occasion when on a long run or if the engine is hot it defaults to 5th gear nothing so far has been recorded as a fault in the diagnostics. It seems to happen when you come on and off the accelerator when the engine is hot, sometimes the gear change can be lumpy or harsh, but 95% of the time it runs really smooth and is a pleasure to drive. Can anyone help, or have any ideas as to what’s wrong Cheers

have you had the quality of the transmission fluid checked??.. that would be my 1st port of call to see if it has suffered the dreaded oil cooler failure.. after that i would be wondering if the torque converter is remaining 'locked up' , but you'd best run it to a local independant automatic gearbox specialist to let them have adrive and see what their opinion is..

cheers mark, i have booked it in for a major service and asked for all the oils to be changed. I have had it into a gearbox specialist, and he doesnt think anything is wrong with the gearbox. He told me to run the car and hope the fault got worse so it could be diagnosed more easily? He also said it my be the throttle control body? Could you let me know what to do if the oil cooler has failed.

    Pray mate.....

if it has failed you'll have a funny emulsion in the coolant header tank..and contaminated gearbox fliud....

Just a though, did he perhaps mean the gearbox VALVE body??.. that would also give those symptoms..

It sounds a bit similar to what mine had been doing, until it went AGAIN. The Official Vauxhall line is "gearbox internals slipping", basically one of the bands gives out and causes all manner of problems when the box warms up. The driving I do (9k past three months) the gearbox gets plenty of chance to warm up. If it does it and the spanner of doom comes up, get your recovery people to pull the code because quite often it doesn't log on the system so by the time the car is back to Vx, the gearbox has cooled down, no fault logged and an apparent working car.

I hope for you it's not this fault or that your covered against this kind of thing.

Vx wouldn't let the dealers touch the gearbox so I don't know if it was repairable, Vx just swapped the box.
