Default Over tightened sump plug ... What to do?!

    Hello,

I've come to do a half year oil chance on my vectra and have noticed the last garage have made a right hash of everything.

Thr fuel pump clip has been snapped so the plug is just pushed in and now I have a over tightened sump plug which I can't get out!

Any advice on what to do?

Is it worth just fitting a new sump?

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks.

Is the plug ok? is it rounded off? or is it just tight?

there are things you could do, like welding a bolt head to it to get a spanner on it (need welding tackle..etc), but I think it's best to take it to a garage, preferably a different garage, it shouldn't take them long to get it off and it'll be cheap I am sure.

You'll need to check the sump itself to make sure the threads haven't been ****ed cos of the overtightening. Are they aluminium sumps? I had to replace the sump on my Bora cos of overtightening, but it turned out to be a blessing in diguise as I could get rid of all the crud that sits on the sump pan.

As soon as I got my Vectra I serviced it - took the sump plug out (with difficulty), bought a new one and welded a bolt head onto it - never had a problem since removing it. I would think replacing the sump is a last resort - try tapping it with a chisel (not too sharp) and it should free off - try warming the plug and surrounding sump with some gentle heat - the plug and the alloy sump should expand at slightly different rates and may help releasing the plug. I would think its unlikely the thread in the sump will be damaged unless it has been cross threaded and even then you could look at having it helicoiled. Good luck with it.

The sump on the bora was pretty cheap and dead easy to replace you see.

Let me know how you get on, I was due to do a service 3 months ago , but found a similar situation not tackled mine yet as its too cold to be lying under the car.

I have bought a replacement plug and have the oil and filter read, think I will be going with the chisel and hammer, as the head it tottally mashed a flat has been filed on one side , may try some mole grips on it?
