confused i need advice on adding a keyfob!

    Good morning folks,
I have recently (very nearly) completed my conversion to a power tailgate on my estate,
got it all tech 2 activated at the weekend, i just need to fit the actuator now- happy days!

I asked the chap if he would add the 3 button keyfob that came with the power tailgate kit, he trid but wasn't able to add it.
He said i might need to buy a brand new key from vauxhall as the one i had was second hand.
He said he could probably wipe all of the keys from the car and try to add them all but wasnt sure if he would be able to re-add my keys so didnt want to leave me without a working car.
He also mentioned that the transponders are part of the circuit in the fob instead of being seperate chips like they were in my mk4 astra , is the transponder somehow coded to the car before being despatched from vauxhall or is the tech 2 able to match it all up?
Has anyone coded on a used key to their car? i'm assuming i can swap the blade of my key over on to the 3 button fob without a problem.

Also if i was to buy a new keyfob from vauxhall, will they be able to order a 3 button fob for my car as it originally only came with a 2 button fob, i'm assuming they use the VIN to order the fobs.

Sorry for the million questions i just dont want to fork out a silly amount of money to get a new key from vauxhall if i dont need to!
Any help would be really great, i'd love to be able to press a button on the remote and watch the tailgate open lol.

    Thanks very much.
    Regards
    Jamie

The transponder is a part of the electronics (chip) inside the fob and yes, it needs to be programmed to your car by the likes of Tech2 / Vauxcom etc.

As far as I hve been able to establish, you cannot re-program a used fob so you will need either a new one, or one that has had the chip replaced (virginised).

Is your existing key a 2 or a 3 button ? If it is a 2 button then that is the kind of key that you will need to add your extra key with.
The electronics in the car that read the fob signal will require the signl from a specific type of fob and again as far as I know, if your car is a 2 button type, then it won't read the signals from a 3 button type unless all the other relevant parts are changed.

Hope this "helps", it is a bit of a minefield area you are walking around in here.

Hi Woody, thanks for that info, although deeply upsetting (it might even ruin my week) its useful to know.
So what you are saying (i hope you are wrong lol) is that because the car came with a 2 button remote it may not be able to recieve 3 button signals- that is even if i can get vauxhall to get me a 3 button fob!
I could be opening a can of worms here but where is the reciever? is it in the door modules or somewhere else?
In hinsight what i really should have done is bought my vxr estate and also bought a fully specced out Elite vectra, i could have then stripped out everything i needed lol.
    Sigh-nothings ever simple.

No problem fella. I think you should have a word with a decent autolocksmith. I have someone in mind who might be able to give you some answers if you want the contact info I can send you a PM.

I've made a few errors along the way with purchasing used fobs, getting them virginised, and then finding the electronics weren't the ones needed for my motor so yes, learning the hard way is no fun.

You might be able to just order up the locking mechanism to fit the tailgate but relative to your car (assuming it's available) then the correct key type would no longer be an issue.

Ok fella, PM on the way shortly. This guy virginises keys and has supplied & fitted replacement keys for members on here.
I can't vouch for his knowledge of issues like replacing complete car modules so as to be able to use a different key to the type originally supplied, but I'm sure he will be able to offer advice.

Outside of the supply of a replacement key, getting it cut and programmed to your car, there are few especially competent guys on here who might be able to assist with your questions about locks and replacing individual components. Possibly @plasma or @kenp my be able to offer advice ?

Anyway, a PM is on it's way in a few minutes.

    Cheers

    Woody

There is no problem in getting a 3 button key to get working in your car... but you cant use a old key, as that would not program to your car..

i got my new keys from ebay....
