    Default Electrical problems... Classic Mini...

    Hi chaps,

Hoped I could pick your brains on this one.

Me and my dad have a classic Mini Cooper, W plate, one of the last of the old style.

Had loads of trouble with starting it over the years, mostly put down to the fact that we don't use it often.

It's had a new battery, new starter motor and new alternator over the past couple of years. Recently we got a trickle charger so we could leave it permanently charging in the garage.

Tried to start it today and it wouldn't turn over, classic symptoms of a dead battery.

However, multimeter was showing 12+ volts in the battery.

Jump started it (first time with another car, second time with my battery booster) and all was fine. Drove for half an hour, switched off and tried to restart... Dead again.

Anyone got any ideas about what could be wrong here? Has the battery just died after being out of use for a while before we got the trickle charger?

Reckon it's simply a case of the battery being able to provide it's 12 volts, but not adequate current?

Cheers for any ideas chaps! I know my way with electrics, but it's all fixed installations, not vehicles!

With engine running it's reading about 13.4v at the alternator. Not checked at the battery itself

If the battery you have fitted is known to be good, it would suggest simply not enough 'oomph' to spin the starter.

    So questions need answering:

Is the starter engaging but just not turning?

Have you had the fitted battery tested for voltage drop or tried a known good battery from a different vehicle with the same non-starting result ?

    Cheers for the reply chaps.

Started seems to be engaging, just not turning over...

Pretty sure the alternator is fine as the battery isn't losing charge whilst the car is running.

I'll check for voltage drop tomorrow and try sticking another battery in...

Not sure if it applies to the newer of the classic shape minis but the older ones had starter solenoids bolted to the inner wing above the gearbox. The battery cable comes from the boot to the solenoid and then to the starter. If the terminals come loose or the solenoid isn't earthed properly then it will give the symptoms of a dead battery. Also check the condition of the battery cable that runs under the car to the solenoid as these run near the exhaust and insulation on the cable get burned and arcs out on the body, an easy way to test this is use a jump lead from the battery +ve terminal to the solenoid

    Great stuff, thanks Spelly!

Not sure about the solenoid, but the cable runs underneath the car. Was planning on sticking it on ramps tomorrow and checking it out. I'll look for the solenoid too.
