    Default Broken Power Steering pump

    Hola!

So it seems that my power steering pump may have given up the ghost :'(

Does anyone have any experience of fitting one and if so how hard it is?

Car has cost me a fortune but due to the fact i can't steer it very easily now i need to get it fixed. Just curious as to how hard it is to DIY it!

It is on a 2007 Vectra SRi 1.9 CDTi 150bhp.

Many Thanks in advance for any help.

First check the DIN rating of your battery, if it falls below about 60% of its rating the EMS will switch off the Power Steering Pump

A replacement is relatively straight forward, you can arrange for the original to be refurbished or exchange
Exchange is cheaper, just make sure the replacement is of the correct type though!

How do you measure the DIN rating?

    How easy is fitting?

You will find the DIN rating stamped on the battery
You then see how many amps the engine takes for a cold crank to start
Multiply the Amps by the Voltage, and that is the DIN rating
    It should be within 90%

But to check how many amps it needs to start you need to put it inline..how will you do that?!

    The fuses look fine.

The symptoms are that at a stand still it is horrific, but when moving it improves a little but seems to be intermittent but regular IE, hard soft hard soft constantly. So it doesn't seem to have complete failure.

So it looks like it may be low fluid.

My question is what fluid do i get?

Everywhere says - VX green mineral - but VX aren't open and i kinda need my car!

    Is this appropriate - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...Id_255218#tab1

Or would the AA carry it?

    Many many thanks!

Have you checked the fluid level?
Equally, with excessively low fluid level the warning light should come on
It's not easily done (where the pump is under the offside headlamp)
However, unclip the front bumper at the wheel arch, then use a torch to show the level

If you are a member of the AA then call them out (erratic and poor performing power steering)
Ask them to check the DIN rating of your battery and the power steering level (if low they will topup)

I checked the fluid level as mine seems to sit on just under the diesel filter/pump housing on the steering rack.

Looks like this: http://www.megavaux.co.uk/part-power...gnum-3573.aspx with the built in reservoir.

So when you take the top off it has the inbuilt dipstick..and it was dry!

Going to try and get some oil tomorrow for it.
