Default Coolant temp symbol flashing and temp gauge maxed out. ... HELP

temperature gauge just maxed out and symbol flashing, however the engine isn't red hot and the fan is blowing cold, could this just be that I need a new thermostat/sensor or is it worse. anyone that can help or has had this problem it would be greatly appreciated,

When this happened on my old car (VW Passat) the water pump had failed. Exact same scenario.

Sounds like water pump to me too. If seized it can take out the timing belt, so don't start the engine.

Does this happen as soon as the ignition is turned on? I.e engine cold, as it could be a faulty sensor. Have you had any work done on the cooling system recently? As it could have an air lock, most vauxhalls dont have any bleed screws so air licks are easy to get

With the engine running take the cap off the header tank, you will see coolant returning to the header straight away. If there is no water returning id say definitely the water pump too.
