    Just a curiosity really.

As I have seen and used many times on my dads ford transit he has a switch underneath the steering wheel (not factory fitted) that is use to keep the engine running when the key is removed although if you touch anything in there ie gears/clutch/hand break extension it will instantly turn off.

Ultimately it is used for powering the tools in the back via a transformer but is very useful for warming it up as you can lock the van using the key and leave it to it for a while.

Is this at all possible with a vectra out of curiosity and how do people think you would achieve this?

It's often an add on feature of aftermarket alarms, I know it was an optional extra when I had my Clifford Concept 650, I had proximity sensors fitted but couldn't stretch to the engine start/warm up, would be a nice little feature though I'd imagine you'd have to have it professionally fitted and provide a certificate to you're insurance company that it's fail safe.

At a guess they would be live wire piggy backing on the stop solenoid with a relay in it to to cut it out from a micro switch on the clutch pedal through a eatrh lead

Just start the car with one key and use your 2nd to lock the car. I've done it a couple of times on the really frosty mornings but I live in a quiet road and I watch the car like a hawk while its running.
The auto start function you are talking about actually voids your thatcham rating as it technically bypasses your immobiliser and most insurers won't cover it.

I take it you're not aware that it's against the law to leave the engine running while the vehicle is unattended?

It won't be left unattended just not with me in it. Lol and yh I can see why it would possibly void the insurance by why would it be acceptable to have it fitted in the first place like it is to so many vehicles? Surely they must have there own safety systems as I know it requires the key to start and the van is imobilised as soon as you try move it

Ah, but is it acceptable, or has the user simply not bothered telling their insurer?
