    confused Water pump cost?

    Hi guys,

I've got to have the water pump replaced on my 2003 2.2 Sri, and was just wondering what I should expect to pay? I thought it better to ask now, than realise later on that I had my pants pulled down.

Only price I've had so far is £262. Which, as Eurocarparts do the pump for £36, I thought was excessive..?

Any input welcome. Offers to pay the bill will be greatly appreciated too.

The big issue here is that your waterpump is driven by the cambelt and all of that will need to be removed and refitted during a water pump change. So, you wouldn't dream normally of paying to have the pump replaced without also changing the otther associated components, hence the cost.

You would need to experience a cambelt failure to begin to understand the enormity of the problems that it will cause for you, and could actually result in your car being uneconomical to repair.

Anyway, I hope that begins to help you understand the costs involved with its replacement fella.

Make sure you get all new parts for the job covered in the quote, IMO it really isn't "worth" re-using the original parts, and if you wait until the water pump fails, takes out the belt, and then takes out the "engine" with it..... it's going to be toooo late.

A 2.2 will have a chain driven engine which makes it that little bit more difficult again. To be honest, I'd stay away from none OEM water pumps. It's an integral part of the engine and if it failed you'll be saying hello to a very big bill very quickly. It's right in the bowels of the engine. £262 is pretty good considering it's a couple of hours labour plus parts.

Cheers, guys. I understand the work involved, so perhaps the price isn't that bad after all.

Should the cost of having the chain replaced at the same time only really be a matter of the extra cost on parts, or would this involve another hour or more labour on top?

Because, to clarify, I think the £262 was for a pump replacement only (locking the chain in place), and not to replace the chain too.

From what I can remember the water pump is driven from the balance shaft chain, not the timing chain. You could enquire how much it would cost to change the timing chain whilst they're in there. Aside from parts I can't see it adding more than another hour on.
