Default TV help. Whats the difference between 'LED Backlit TV' and 'Edge-lit LED TV'.

    Guys,

My dads after a TV. Just for everyday usage, no gaming, no blueray, just general day to day Sky and DVD, etc.

We have seen a nice Toshiba 40" but are a little confused.

Basically, the TV says LCD panel but it also says LED. The LED part is " Edge-lit LED TV". The question is, is this just an LCD with LED lights around the edge of the picture OR is this an LED TV?

Also, whats the difference between the Back-lit LED and Edge-lit LED APART from the thickness of the actual TV?

As said, dad isnt going to be using for anything extraordinary but at the same time we dont want to fork out for an LED and end up with an LCD again.

Please help and also what would be better for us.

    Thanks.

LED usually means it's LED backlit LCD, manufactures have their own marketing names but it's basically the same technology. Your best bet is to look at toshiba site at the specs of the model you're considering.

LED and LCD I thought were very different technology's? LCD TVs are not as vivid as led types and generally much thicker by today's standards. If its for general viewing then a LCD with good contrast is a safe bet

You'd know if it was an LED tv - it would be very thin and therefore much lighter than normal flat panel tvs. If it weighs 15-20 kg, then it's not a LED one.

Its simply the way its backlit see this paragraph from AV forums:

'LED televisions' as you might currently find in shops are only LCD televisions with LED backlighting or edgelighting. The LED back/edgelighting technology is somewhat more efficient and can look attractive. Edgelighting technology allows the TVs to be a bit thinner than normal LCD televisions.
Whether you decide to pay a premium price for 'LED televisions' is up to you, but for gawd's sake, don't pay more for one because you think it is fantastic, radically new, superior technology, because it certainly isn't.
