    Default Auto box tiptronic weirdness

    Hi Guys,

when I pop my automatic into manual mode and for example put it in 4 at 40 mph it will run arround 1600 rpm, when I floor it then the box raises the revs sort of like when the clutch is slipping on manual. Is this normal?

    Thanks,
    Martin

The box will change down to the required gear to do what your asking it to do but will not change up for you.

hmm but it still shows 4 on the gear indicator and I don't feel it changing down it's more like it will slip the clutch on purpose for a bit and than once the car has some momentum it's back to "normal". Just for the record I have a 6-speed auto 1.9 cdti 150

Yes I have the same box and I am trying to remember what my display does? Very rare I use it in manual.

I just had a look in the manual (should have done that in first place) and it says it will kick down even in manual mode, though I haven't gone past the kick down point with the pedal, I just wanted it to accelerate hard. The only reason I tried this is I want to dyno the car and the guy asked me on the phone if the box will stay in gear and won't kick down. Now it seems it won't stay in gear and I can't dyno it really?

the gear will always stay in the same number in manual when you floor it
not sure what your little deisel is like but my 2.8t will start to fly up to 70 in a matter of seconds .
maybe the deisel not the same doing 40 in 4th might need a to knock down a gear.

think it only goes down the gears if you are driving to slow

I've got the 5 speed auto in my 2.2 direct and in manual mode the gearbox kicks down when I floor it. Say it's in 5th, it will drop to 3rd on kickdown, and will also kickdown from from 4th to 2nd. Seems to drop down 2 gears but haven't tried it when in 3rd to see if it drops to 1st.
